Knowledge of the tsunamigenic potential of a region, both in terms of historical tsunamis and the understanding of the potential sources, is a fundamental first step for later hazard and risk assessment studies that can lead to mitigation measures and evacuation plans for Civil Protection.
The former highlights the need to compile tsunami catalogues that should be as homogeneous and reliable as possible in order to produce a tsunami hazard evaluation also as homogeneous and reliable as possible.
Although tsunamis are not considered a high threat in the coast of Iberia, Balearic and Canary Island, records show that they have occurred in the past and sometimes they have been highly destructive (the most recent example the Lisbon tsunami of 1755).
The large coastal populations that nowadays lives in this region, highly increased during the summer period, makes it vulnerable to loss of life and the presence of coastal critical infrastructures enhances the associated risk.
The former argument motivates the aim for the present workshop.
The number of participants to this meeting will be limited to 40 people and participation is under invitation. Please contact the organizers for further information and if you wish to attend. The list of confirmed participants can be found here.
